Privacy Policy

The short version

FileTransferX is designed so that your files never need to be stored anywhere but your own devices. Direct peer-to-peer transfers work without any account. Relay-assisted transfers on restrictive networks require a free account (name and email). We do not permanently store the files you transfer. We use a small, essential set of cookies, plus optional analytics cookies that only load if you accept them. This page explains exactly what that means in detail.

Your files and messages

When you send a file with FileTransferX, it is transferred directly from your device toward the receiving device in small chunks. FileTransferX does not copy your files to a database or a permanent file store, and it does not retain them after a transfer session ends. If a direct connection between the two devices isn't possible on a given network, a relay server may briefly facilitate the connection so the transfer can still complete — that server passes data through in transit and is not designed to keep a copy of it. A short message sent with Transfer Text is handled the same way: it moves directly between the two devices, is never written to a database or file store, and is discarded when the session ends.

Pairing information

Starting a send session generates a temporary QR code and a short transfer code used only to pair two devices for a single session. This code is not tied to your identity, is not reusable once its session ends, and is discarded shortly after.

Accounts and personal information

Direct peer-to-peer transfers do not require an account or any personal information. If your network requires a relay connection, you will be asked to create a free account with your name and email address. You can sign up with an email and password, or use Google sign-in. We store your name, email, and relay usage data to manage your transfer quota. We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties. If you email us through the Contact Us page, we use that address only to reply to you.

Cookies and local storage

FileTransferX stores a single preference — your light or dark theme choice — in your browser's local storage. This value stays on your device and is never transmitted to us.

On your first visit, a banner asks whether we may set an analytics cookie (Google Analytics) to help us understand how visitors use the site. That cookie is only set if you accept — if you reject or ignore the banner, no analytics cookie is set. We never use cookies for advertising, and we never run third-party scripts that follow you across other websites. You can change your choice at any time using the "Cookie Preferences" link in the footer.

Technical connection data

Establishing any connection over the internet requires devices to exchange basic network information, such as IP addresses, in order to find each other and, where necessary, route a relayed connection. This information is used only to facilitate your transfer and is not logged for tracking purposes or linked to an identity we hold.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of FileTransferX after a change means you accept the updated policy.
